PHYSICIST, PhD ASTROPHYSICS

Giannis Kontogiannis

He is a physicist and a PhD in Astrophysics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Leibniz-Institut für Astrophysik Potsdam (AIP) in Germany. He has previously worked as a researcher at the National Observatory of Athens and the Center for Research in Astronomy and Applied Mathematics of the Academy of Athens. His research interests include solar activity phenomena, space weather forecasting, and the study of quiet Sun phenomena.

From 2007 to 2015, he worked as a scientific collaborator at the Interactive Exhibition of Science and Technology of the Eugenios Foundation, with the subject of science communication. From 2016 to 2018, he was an instructor of educational programs at the Catherine Laskaridis Foundation. He has attended seminars on science communication, has given popular science lectures at educational/scientific institutions, and has participated in the development/design and execution of numerous presentations, demonstrations of experiments, and educational activities for students, the general public, science festivals, and television shows.

He is a member of the editorial team of the magazine “Science Illustrated” (2010-2013) and the supplement “Prisma, supplement for the sciences, technology, and society” of the newspaper “Avgous” (2016-present). He has written popular science articles in newspapers, a script for a science comic, has taken on the scientific editing of an educational theater performance, and has participated in stand-up comedy shows with scientific topics.

He is a musician (guitarist) and is involved in songwriting and music composition.
