Hellenic Amateur
Astronomy Association
The Hellenic Amateur Astronomy Association (HAAA) was created in 2003 by a small but courageous core of active amateur astronomers with one main goal: to highlight the magic of observational astronomy. Behind this goal is a desire to enable people to follow the methods and practices of the professional astronomical community. On this journey, amateur astronomers are not limited to simply observing celestial objects, but also create images and data of high scientific quality. And these data are used both by themselves and by professional scientists for further studies to understand the objects and their phenomena.
HAAA was not limited only to the collection of data – according to the standards of other well-known organizations, such as BAA, AAVSO and IMO – but also proceeded to write and publish scientific articles in Greek and international conferences, as well as in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
At the same time, HAAA actively participated in all the collective efforts of the amateur astronomical community, communicated and collaborated with the professionals, laying some of the fundamental foundations that are still valid today.
At the same time, HAAA addressed the general public and responded many times to calls for the communication and dissemination of astronomy both to the general public and to schools. In addition to the actions, HAAA also developed methods of approaching the public, upgrading the work provided.
In 2023, HAAA concluded a significant and successful cycle and handed over the management of its assets and legacy as a whole to PeriAstron, with the only requirement that we take even bigger steps in the same direction. We express our sincere gratitude to them, and additionally we commit to further expanding this project.
