Astronomy in Schools – a week in Crete

The “Astronomy in Schools” program traveled for a week to Heraklion, Crete, offering a unique experience to students, parents, chaperones and teachers.

From October 29 to November 2, we undertook actions in Heraklion, Kalessa, and Petrokefali. We took it upon ourselves to “guide” students, from kindergarten to elementary school, and their companions through the night sky. Where are Rhodes and Chania? How did Theseus manage to go back to his homeland? Unraveling the thread of Greek mythology through the starry sky, the participants got to know basic constellations. This was followed by observations with PeriAstron’s telescopes, where young and old were impressed by viewing of the Moon, Jupiter and Saturn. At the same time, they also ran morning educational programs in which young students learned about the Solar system and played with the planets.

The “Astronomy in Schools” program aspires to be not just a learning activity but an inspiration and a cultivation of admiration for the world around us. At the same time it aims to connect students with astronomy in particular and science in general.

So we look forward to meeting again!
